Terms of Service — Read My Document (Google Docs add-on)

These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) govern your use of the Read My Document add-on for Google Docs and the backend services behind it (together, the “Service”), operated by Birdie Ltda. (“Birdie”, “we”, “us”). By installing the add-on, opening it in Google Docs, or subscribing to a paid plan, you agree to these Terms.

1. The Service

Read My Document converts text from the Google Docs document you have open into spoken audio, using a combination of voice engines hosted by Birdie and third-party neural text-to-speech providers. The add-on runs inside Google Docs; the synthesis happens on Birdie’s servers. Related features include highlighting while reading, MP3 export, reading text inside images, a pronunciation dictionary, and AI-generated summaries, key points and quizzes.

2. Accounts and subscriptions

The standard voices work without an account. Premium features — neural and studio voices, MP3 export, AI features and higher monthly allowances — require a paid subscription, which requires signing in with your Google account so the subscription can be attached to it.

Google does not process payments for Google Workspace add-ons. Subscriptions bought from the Google Docs add-on are sold and billed by Polar, acting as merchant of record, which handles payment, applicable taxes and invoicing. Birdie does not receive or store your card details. You can manage or cancel your subscription from Polar’s customer portal, reachable from the subscription screen in the add-on.

A subscription bought for one platform is tied to the account that bought it. A subscription purchased for the Microsoft Word add-in does not automatically grant premium features in the Google Docs add-on, because they are different accounts on different platforms. If you need both, write to us.

3. Plans, allowances and fair use

• Monthly allowance. Each paid plan includes a monthly allowance of synthesised characters. When you exceed it, premium voice requests are declined until the allowance resets. Standard voices keep working.
• Trial limits. Where a free trial is offered, premium usage during the trial is capped at a fair-use threshold. It is meant for evaluating the Service, not for production use before subscribing.
• Rate limiting. We may rate-limit accounts sending requests far above typical patterns, to keep the Service available for everyone.
• Top-ups. Where offered, character packs are one-time purchases that add to your balance. They are consumed after your monthly allowance and are non-refundable once used.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to use the Service to:

• Synthesise content that is illegal, infringes third-party rights, or breaches Google Workspace Marketplace policies.
• Impersonate a real person, or produce audio intended to deceive listeners about who is speaking.
• Resell, redistribute or expose the Service as your own product or API.
• Circumvent allowances, authentication or rate limits, or automate the Service at a scale that degrades it for others.

You must also comply with the terms of the underlying voice providers when you choose their voices. We may suspend accounts that breach this section.

5. Your content

Your documents remain yours. You grant Birdie only the limited, temporary permission needed to process the text you submit in order to produce audio and the other outputs you request. We do not store your document text, and we do not use it to train AI models. See the Privacy Policy for the detail. You are responsible for having the right to use the content you submit.

6. Availability and changes

We aim to keep the Service available but do not guarantee uninterrupted operation. Maintenance, provider outages and Google platform changes can interrupt it. We may add, change or withdraw features, including individual voices, when a provider discontinues them. If we make a materially adverse change to a paid plan, we will tell subscribers by email in advance.

7. Cancellation and refunds

You can cancel at any time; your plan stays active until the end of the period you already paid for, and then stops renewing. Refunds are handled by Polar as merchant of record, under its refund policy and any statutory rights you have in your country. If something went wrong on our side, write to us and we will help.

8. Disclaimer and liability

The Service is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind to the fullest extent permitted by law. Synthesised speech and AI-generated summaries, key points and quizzes may contain errors or misread text; do not rely on them where accuracy is critical without checking the source document.

To the extent permitted by law, Birdie’s total liability arising from the Service is limited to the amount you paid for it in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including your statutory consumer rights.

9. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time by uninstalling the add-on and revoking its access from your Google account. We may suspend or terminate access for breach of these Terms, for abuse, or where required by law, and will normally give notice unless doing so is unlawful or would worsen the problem.

10. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Chile, and the courts of Santiago, Chile have jurisdiction, without depriving you of the protection of mandatory consumer law in your country of residence.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. The “Last updated” date above always reflects the current version, and material changes will be announced inside the add-on and, for subscribers, by email.
