Read My Document

Read My Document reads your documents out loud. Open the side panel, press play, and listen to a document while you do something else — proofread by ear, review a long report on the move, or study without staring at the screen.

What it does

  • Reads the whole document or just your selection. Play, pause, skip forward and back, and change the speed while it reads.
  • Hundreds of voices in dozens of languages. From free built-in voices to premium neural voices that sound close to a human narrator.
  • Follows along as it reads. The paragraph being spoken is highlighted, so it is easy to keep your place.
  • Reads text inside images. Scanned pages and screenshots are recognised on our own servers, so they can be read aloud too.
  • Export to MP3. Turn a document into an audio file you can listen to anywhere.
  • Pronunciation dictionary. Teach it how to say names, acronyms and technical terms the way you want.

Where it works

  • Google Docs — an add-on installed from Google Workspace Marketplace, opened from Extensions → Read My Document.
  • Microsoft Word — an add-in available on Microsoft AppSource, for Word on the desktop and Word on the web.

Free and paid

Read My Document is free to install and free to use with the standard voices. Paid plans add premium neural and studio voices, higher monthly limits, MP3 export and the AI features. You can read more on the pricing screen inside the add-on.

Google does not process payments for Workspace add-ons. Subscriptions bought from the Google Docs add-on are handled by Polar, our merchant of record.

Your documents stay yours

The add-on only reads the document you have open, and only when you ask it to. The text is used to produce the audio and is never stored on our servers, never sold, and never used to train AI models. The details are in the Privacy Policy.
